Sansepolcro
Homeland of the famous painter Piero della Francesca, which is still home, Sansepolcro, in the upper valley of the Tiber, is a medieval city enriched with fine Renaissance and Baroque buildings. The origin of the city is lost in myth. Legend has it that Sant'Arcano and Sant'Egidio, two pilgrims returning from the Holy Land, stopped in these places driven by a miraculous sign from God and we have built a chapel where to put the sacred relics recovered in Jerusalem. The medieval town, according to tradition, develops after around this sacred building. A partial confirmation of this hypothesis, Sansepolcro is cited by many medieval historians under the title of "new Jerusalem". Of course, Borgo Sansepolcro is an important part of St. Francis when he goes or returns from Verna. Once, say the Fioretti, did not even realize you pass through the crowd biturgense from what is kidnapped by the contemplation of God is dedicated to the saint of Assisi, in the center of the city, stands the church, built between 1258 and 1321 and the first example of Gothic style in the city. Outside, still retains the character of architecture fourteenth century (the bell tower and the façade, the Gothic entrance arch trefoiled and the big eye) while the interior was completely renovated in the eighteenth century, retains its original nave, typical of the mendicant orders.
